Everything You Need To Know About Zebras

Introduction

Zebras are very beautiful and unique horse-like creatures. Having black and white stripes covering their bodies, zebras are very well at hiding in the long, striped savanna grasses. The animal is an obvious prey when it comes to lions and other animals such as leopards, cheetahs and even hyenas. Zebras have very good eyesight and can see clearly from far distances. Also, the zebra’s hearing is very good too! These features allow the zebra to fit into its adaptation.


The Zebra's Diet

You may already know this, but zebras are herbivores. An herbivore is an animal who only eats plants. They love grass, shrubs, bark, twigs, weeds and about everything that isn’t poisonous or meat. You will never see a zebra trying to sneak up and hunt something.


Quick & Interesting Facts

• Full grown zebras are 4-5 feet tall.
• The reason zebras have big ears is so they can hear when a predator is coming up behind them so they have a chance to run.
• Zebras live up to 35 years.
• The zebras biggest threat is habitat loss.
• Some zebra foals are killed at a very young age by stallions who want to take their mothers away from them.

Zebras live in the plains and grasslands of Africa. Every zebra that isn’t at a zoo, is most likely in the wild in Africa.

Are zebras endangered in any way?

Some types of zebras have been pronounced endangered like the Grevy's Zebra and the Mountain Zebra.

Why are zebras black and white? And why do they only come in that pattern?

Zebras are black and white so their predators can’t spot them when they are hiding in the long, striped looking grasses. They only come that way because they are meant to fit into their environment and adaptation.

Can female zebras have more than one foal at a time?

No. Zebras were designed to only give birth to one baby at a time.

How many “plains zebras” are alive today?

There are about 750,000 plains zebras today.

As you can tell, zebras are quite interesting animals.
